I have here a Beatles 3rd State pealed BUTCHER cover. It doesn't get any better than this for HOLY GRAIL of collectors pieces.
The suitcase sleeve has been pealed away to reveal the infamous BUTCHER sleeve. Capitol records did not want to waste all their money on destroying a million already pressed sleeves, so they recalled all the sleeves and pasted over another 12 inch slick, now called the suitcase or trunk cover. Some were not sent back and they are now the ones everyone wants, but these are like hen's teeth to find. Obviously when word got out that some of the sleeves now had the BUTCHER sleeve underneath, they went ahead and tried to remove the trunk cover. Some to severe damage to the sleeve and leaving only traces of the BUTCHER sleeve. There are now professionals who remove the trunk cover.
What I have here is a fine example of a great peal away and full removal. As you can see by the photos it looks a little like a canvas painting/photo as quite a bit of the glue is still on the sleeve, making it feel heavy and thicker than the usual Capitol USA albums. The back of the sleeve has some stains and some creasing. And a split that can be repaired from the inside.

It is amazing how they have managed to do a whole peal away, with as little damage as possible. There is obviously some damage, mainly to the right side opening. The photo looks faded. I absolutely love this sleeve, it would look great in a frame and would grace any Beatles collection.
The record itself is in good condition it has some scratches and depending on what record player you are playing it on it sounds great or scratchy. But to be honest you can change the record, it is the sleeve where the rarity is.
I also have a copy of the recall letter asking shop owners and dealers to withdraw the record from the shelves and return back
