OUTER SLEEVE REVIEW
This is a laminated card slip sleeve cover with John Kosh credit. It is in sound condition and not falling apart in any way. No writing or stickers. the one seam that hold it together is soundly stuck along its length. The majority of the corners are in excellent with only light wear to the tips. The bottom front left corner has the most rubbing. There are light fine surface marks but no bad marks and this remains a great looking cover. Grades as excellent.
SLEEVE REVIEW
FRONT. Laminated sleeve. Hardly any wear of any note. No bad creasing, no rips or tears or indents. Free from sticker or handwriting. Some fine surface marks can be expected and there are some but not as much as you for a cover this age. It looks really good. Things to mention: Some rubbing to the back bottom left corner. And at the top righthand corner we have a small area of surface lift; a small section of the top layer of the cover has come off and it revels the white paper below. Probably the laminated got snagged at some point. Grades Excellent minus.
BACK. With the red Apple logo. Much like the front. Looking good and with no particular flaws to mention. Grades Excellent
SPINE. Perfect no rubbing, clear text. Crisp edge that looks like new. Grades Near Mint
OPENING. Good and flat with no real softening. No feathering.
CORNERS. mentioned previously any issues with the corners. Top and bottom left corners look excellent plus! Tope right very good, bottom right very good.
INNER SLEEVE REVIEW
The original plain white inner states -Patent no 1125555 / made in England. I am pleased to say that this inner is in very near mint condition.
I will also provide a plain white inner for shipping.
INNER TRAY REVIEW
The inner tray is the original and is made of card. It is in albeit for one thing. The tray has cleanly torn away on one side top and bottom. Not an uncommon occurrence. Other than that it is clean, and very presentable and with very little creasing. I can't grade it any better than good due to the damage.
BOOK
The book looks like new and as if never read. The binding spears secure and no damage is evident to pages or cover. Not rips or tears, an extremely preserved copy of this normally fragile book. Grades Near Mint.
LABELS
Both labels are in Excellent plus condition. Clean and stain free. Some very fine spindle marks are present , and there is very little sign of wear to the centre hole as is often the case.
VISUAL GRADES
SIDE ONE.
A clean and glossy looking side with many light surface marks and mild scratches. There is plenty of unmarked surface so don't imagine the worst. The longest scratch; most likely a stylus slip does run in a line across all the tracks. It is not a deep mark and it varies severity along its length from moderate to light. There are a couple of other moderated marks nearby that run across tracks two and three. Many other sleeve marks, cleaning scuffs, slips are easily scene. I'd give it a 5 out of 10 grade very good minus.
SIDE TWO.
Very much like side one. Some longer fine marks that traverse a track or more. A few shorter more visible marks that are moderate. Plenty of light sleeve and cleaning marks present. Again 5 -10 grades very good minus.
AUDIO GRADINGS
SIDE ONE.
Two of us. A quiet intro and really clear when John does the spoken intro. Really warm sounding recording. Light crackle noticed at the outro. Grades:EX
Dig a pony. Quiet between tracks. No distortion when the lads are going for the top notes. A bit of crackle in the middle and in quieter moments; not that there are many in this song. Very good plus
Across the universe. Some moderate crackle between tracks and at the intro for a few bars. Also a mild singular pop during the first line, could be dust. Audio improves as tracks continues. Again another track where the audio has not deteriorated that much. There is no distortion or breaking of higher frequencies. I've heard some horribly distorted versions of this track, not this one. Light background crackle in outro Very good
I me mine. Good punchy start, nice recording sound. High hats are sounding crisp. Guitars are also sounding good. Light crackle here and there, of no real consequence. Excellent minus
Dig it. Sounds very good through. Light crackle here and there. Grades Excellent minus
Let it be. The sound of the recording is great. Some crackle in the intro. Couple of mild pops in the first verse, and a slightly raised level of crackle. No jumps or loud noises. By the second verse thing are continuing to sound great. Distortion free, clear sounding instruments and brilliant separation. With original vinyl you really can hear news things every time you play it; Im hearing stuff in the background I've not heard before. Missed piano notes, and some weird kind off backing vocals? This is an interesting mix. Sounding really good and not overplayed despite the crackles at the start and two pops in the end chorus. Grades as Very good minus.
Maggie Mae. Sounds just fine and with no issue. Grades Excellent
SIDE TWO.
I've got a feeling. Good start. Light crackle in the background. Keyboard is sounding powerful. Vocals are clear. No distortion on the top end when Macca starts screaming. Sounds like the band is in the room with me. Grades as very good.
One after 909. Bright sounding track with some understated keyboard playing by Billy Preston. Some light crackle in the background and quiet parts. Grades excellent.
The Long and winding road. The rich sound of this recording is evident. It sounds a little dusty to me. This record could benefit from a deep clean being so old. Still it is not an overplayed sounding track and grades as very good.
For you blue. A little bit of crackle between tracks and just at the very start. This is another recording that sound like you are in the room with the band. Some crackle in the back near the very end. Grades as very good plus.
Get back. Nice clear start with then background chat. Sounding great as it kicks off. No complaints with the audio throughout. Some crackle at the very end during the outro, but not overpowering the spoken word banter at the end. Grades as excellent.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This is the classic original package and there are limited numbers these days but you can still easily pick up a copy. In excellent condition you can see it sells for quite high prices. This set is very presentable and in pretty good condition. There are some flaws here and there but also bonuses like the near mint book and some great sounding vinyl. This is a copy for someone that is looking to add the box set to their collection and enjoy a decent playing copy of the album. This is not a CD clear pressing, it is an excellent addition to your collection.
GRADING YOUR VINYL
I use the classic U.K Rare Record Guide grading system. Detailed below are their guidelines.
MINT
The LP or single is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.
EXCELLENT
The LP or single shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD
The LP or single has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and an occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover and contents without any major defects.
GOOD
The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
