The Beatles Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You 7” 1962 1st press red label 45-R 4949
This single was purchased by me from new on its first release in late 1962.
The stamped matrix numbers are 7XCE 17144-1N and 7XCE 17145-1N. Also stamped are ZT 1 T T and ZT1 N. The labels have no 'Made in Great Britain' text under the company £ sign on the right hand side and are in very good clean condition with no inscriptions.
I believe this is a first pressing based on information on Discogs which is quoted below.
The vinyl is pretty bright and I could detect few, if any, marks or scuffs. It plays very well with some surface noise, more noticeable on the quieter bits, but nothing to distract too much from the music. There are no skips or jumps. There is surface noise on the run ins and run outs. I rate this as a VG following the Goldmine Grading Guide.
The sleeve is the original Parlophone paper sleeve with an angular, diamond pattern which is in very good condition for its age. This sleeve design appears to be rare compared to the other popular striped pattern. There are creases and some discolouration. There is handwritten text “Love Me Do” in each of the two top corners on the front. I remember doing this to make sure that this single didn’t get put back into the more frequently seen striped pattern which housed my Please Please Me single, which I've now sold..
According to Discogs:
“In January1963 Parlophone ceased production of its red label design. Consequently original issues of Love Me Do & Please Please Me were the only Beatles singles, released in the '60s in the UK, with these red labels.
Please note ...[this] version of the song … was recorded on Tuesday 4th September 1962 at Abbey Road Studios for their first single … This version features Ringo Starr on drums and does not contain any tambourine playing. It can also be identified by the presence of the matrix number 7XCE 17144-1N in the run out. In recent years there have been some reissues that have also included this version.
The main differentiator between this version of the red label issue, compared to the other original 1962 versions, is the absence of the 'MADE IN GT. BRITAIN' text under the Parlophone logo on the label. Two other original 1962 red label versions with this text can be seen [on Discogs links].
A ZT tax code stamped in the runout indicates a pressing made before November 1962.”
Later pressings had tax codes of PT, MT then KT.
Discogs also notes there is another version of the song which was recorded on Tuesday 11th September 1962 at Abbey Road Studios. This version has an uncredited Andy White on drums and can be identified by the presence of a tambourine which was played by Ringo Starr. There are also text alignment differentiators which distinguish these known variants.
