LP record Grading Scale

Mint USA issues should be still sealed (ss) and no shelf wear is present on the cover and shrink. Mint can sometimes be an unsealed 45, or import LP, or USA LP originally issued without shrink which must be flawless in every way.

NM Near mint vinyl appears like new with a nice crisp label, with perhaps no more than a light surface scuff or two, and should play like it was just purchased from a retail store.

VG+ Very good plus is a clean, bright copy which may have a few inaudible surface scuffs, or hairline scratches. (but not many of them) Although the record may have been played several times, it should still play like new, or very close to it.

VG Very Good is a reasonable playing copy which will usually have some visible groove wear, but not enough wear to cause serious degradation of sound. I do not accept feeler scratches in this grade..

VG- will have some degrading flaw that prevents the record from being Vg, such as a "feeler scratch" which will produce a repeater tick. I usually do not offer anything in VG- or below, unless the record is a hard to find collectible.

G A good record plays through without skipping, but will have major groove wear and loss of luster, and will produce noise and distortion.

Fair and poor: the record may skip due to scratches, heavily worn and distorted to the point or irritation, may be cracked, or chipped!

Grading is based upon the Revised Goldmine standard. All records are visually inspected under a high intensity lamp. Some records will be play graded. The associated equipment is a Dual 701 direct drive turntable, (for its durability) with a Shure M97 XE cartridge which represents the typical high quaility magnetic cartridge. Listening is  through Acoustat full range electrostatic speakers. (powered by Adcom) The resolution of this system reveals any groove damage or wear that may be present, as well as pressing quality, and quiescence. You can be assured that my play grade of NM, is guaranteed high quality and wear free, and distortion free, so you'll receive a wonderful playing copy that will help fill your world with music.
