The Beatles Mexican EP Mono Apple George #2
Cover---Really beautiful fold-out cover. Graphics and paper in sharp, bold condition with light outdent to both sides. I bought these at the Sound Odyssey I worked for in the early 1980’s. I’d immediately taken the 45’s out of the sleeves and put them in plain white sleeves, in order to avoid any further outdent or dirtwear from occurring. These covers are in beautiful condition.
Vinyl---Gorgeous Near Mint. Full stop, no argument. Well okay, there’s a slight warp on this one too, but it does not affect playback.
Okay yeah, these are different mono mixes.
“Don’t Bother Me” has a combination of Ringo’s hi-hat snapping shut on the backbeat, along with a tambourine overdub on the U.S. mono mix. This one has just the hi-hat, and the tambourine is mixed out.
“Taxman” is surprising from the start. The count-in intro is mixed out, and the song starts cold. Secondly, the cowbell that starts on the line, “Be thankful I don’t take it all” is completely mixed out, and there is no cowbell anywhere in this mix. Finally, the end solo fades early.
“If I Needed Someone” makes me wonder whether John is behind these mono mixes. First of all, from the start, the 12-string electric is bright, and right up in your face when compared to the U.S. mono mix. Secondly, the same thing goes for the tambourine and maracas. Gorgeous clarity, whereas the U.S. mono mix uses them more as background texture. VERY different. But finally, you know those McCartney harmonies that sound like Paul is screaming in George’s ear? Those are turned way down, and it’s Lennon’s harmonies that are clearer. You can still hear McCartney plainly, but he sits in the mix much more reasonably.
“Think For Yourself” sounds pretty much like the U.S. mono mix with the exception that George’s fuzz guitar is also upfront and very clear.
I know that John was the one who had a hand in the sequencing of these E.P’s, and that he also hated the new stereo mixes of the red and blue sets. Very subtle differences that make for interesting listening.
