Description
The Beatles “Please Please Me” Mono LP 1963 First Y&B Labels and First Edition Cover
This early mono pressing has the transitional Parlophone yellow and black labels omitting the duplicate “33 1/3” text after the matrix code which had appeared on the previous design. The cover is the first edition of the E. J. Day production with the credit for the photographer, Angus McBean, aligned to the far right corner. The “Emitex” inner sleeve has the transparent polythene lining with “Patents Applied For” text.
I’m not a dealer or expert collector so I have provided the photos to indicate the overall condition of the record, the cover and sleeve.
The record has been ultrasonically cleaned on an AudioDesk machine and shows a reassuring glossy finish. There are hairlines and wear to the vinyl but the record did not skip or jump on my playback test. The labels are clean and bright with a faint impression of the tax code on the Side 1 label. The matrix code and stampers are:
Side 1 XEX 421 - 1N 1 PH
Side 2 XEX 422 - 1N 1 RA
The cover has been cared for since 1963. There is a biro mark against “Boys” and “Ask Me Why” on the back and a sellotape repair along half of the bottom flip back. The corners are worn and the front laminate is showing creases. Otherwise, the cover is remarkably clean and intact.
The inners sleeve is clean and fully intact.
I will package the record in a separate anti-static sleeve outside the cover and Emitex inner and use a sturdy record mailer with extra protection inside. Tracked and insured post in the U.K. is free of charge, international tracked and insurance is at Royal Mail rates.
