From Stanley Panenka’s Ultimate Beatles Record Collection Page | 73 28B. PLEASE, PLEASE ME/ ASK ME WHY 45RPM Single (Vee Jay VJ-498) Released in early 1963,the commercial singles are QUITE RARE as Vee Jay pressed less than 7500 and most of them are long gone!. Some of the examples have the word Beatles spelled as Beattles as this variation is! The commercial single is historically significant because it is the first record with “The Beattles” on the label and is one of THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER COMMERCIAL SINGLES BY BEATLES RECORD COLLECTORS! COMMERCIAL SINGLES IN NEAR MINT OR BETTER CONDITION ARE ULTRA RARE as just about all of them are in VG+ or less condition!! THE COMMERCIAL SINGLES THAT ARE IN TRUE NEAR MINT OR BETTER CONDITION ARE UNDER VALUED DUE TO THE RARITY OF FINDING THEM IN NEAR MINT OR BETTER CONDITION AND DEMAND AND THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE THEY REPRESENT! The Vee Jay Labeling Mishap The Beatles were so unheard of in America in early 1963 that initial copies of VJ 498 did not even have the name of the band spelled correctly. Including the promotional copies of the record, there are seven label variations, four of which have “The Beatles” spelled as “The Beattles” (with an extra “t”). There are also corrected pressings of the record issued later in 1963. While copies of the first pressings are the most sought after by collectors, due to the novelty of “Beatles” being misspelled, any authentic copy of VJ 498, corrected or not, is quite a collectors item, as very few were pressed and fewer still have survived. A Near Mint copy of this record sold recently at auction for close to $5,200. Please be sure to read entire description and look at all photos.
