The Beatles. Please, Please Me. Yellow & Black Label. Excellent. 1963 Mono.

  The Beatles First Album released in early 1963 and its title being Please, Please Me. Within a few months the record was a best seller and it had pressed three times before the iconic and most popular and loved Yellow & Black Parlophone Labels entered the lime-light. This is the Third of the Yellow & Blacks, with the first being an odd and short lived 33 1/3 (record speed) being above the YEX and then another short lived replacement, before this, with its 1 & 2 for the Sides, being centrred for aesthetic reasons under the YEX. Whatever - this is a fantastic First Press of the Yellow & Black Parlophone of its mont in 1963 and all these things were happening within a few months.

The record itself has superb vinyl for a record of almost 50 years old and I would rate this, both sides, as Execellent Plus, with just a few hairlines and paper marks, but nothing serious at all! It is in the original and favoured Mono and has a fantastic punchy beat and sound. The cover is not reflective of the vinyl and shows just how this heavy-card E J Dean sleeve did its job in protecting the precious vinyl. Whilst the front looks and is fine, with its laminate gloss and super 60's colour looking great, the back, being mat (why did they always do this?!) is a little tired, but still fully intact and with fraying, a little staining, but all in all still doing its job! This is a famous E J Dean sleeve, as it has the large Mono on the front and the large format was about to end, just a few months later.

As always with The Beatles and Parlophone and of course EMI, the provenance of this fabulous recordand hints of just when it rolled off the press at EMI Hayes is hidden in the run-offs on the vinyl, with Side One having YEX 421 1N and its Mother being '2', with Stamper being 'TL' or ' 98'. Side Two has a Matrix of YEX 422 - 1N. Its Mother is '4' and its Stamper is 'GG', being '11'. This is a LOW Mother for both sides and a very LOW Stamper for both sides, too. This really is a First Press of the Fifth Issue and with its nice, clean vinyl, still heavy in its superb EMI weight and lovely in its black lustre, it is a collectable and superb Yellow & Black Please, Please Me. It has the original EMItex inner sleeve, which is still white, clean and just aged with colour of the atmosphere.

All in all, whilst the outer sleeve (cover) may show the signs of its age, the vinyl belies them and this is a nice package for the Beatles fan and an appreciating assett.

Thanks. Oh, grading... I quote the Record Collector, but I am using my honesty, my eye and my ear, so please respect that it is my opinion, which I hope is good!

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler."

As well as the above grades, Near Mint is often used as well; this is really for a record that appears new but is known to have been played because the label has light spindle marks or because it has come from a previous owner and is assumed to have been played by them. For records which appear to fall between the accepted grades, + and - are also often added to the grading.

In addition to the basic grading, any individual faults should be noted separately such as if an otherwise Excellent cover has a name written on it, or a 7" single is missing its original centre etc.
