The Beatles - Rubber Soul - ‘LOUD’ Cut.

PMC 1267 Mono.

Original 1965 Yellow & Black Parlophone Label.

A UK first press album in 100% original condition, featuring the withdrawn very first press ‘LOUD’ cut issue, with matrices - 1 / 1, in very good condition.

When ‘Rubber Soul’ was first released the production sound on the 1/1 matrices records was somewhat different to the final later agreed Mono mix. The storey apparently goes that George Martin was not happy with this mix, but his decision did not come in time for these now very collectable 1 / 1 matrices versions to become available to the public. Some say that the 1 / 1 matrixices were ONLY available for sale for one day!, other stories state it was 2 weeks until the 1 / 1 matrix was offialcally withdrawn/ discontinued from the public market.

These early mixes only ever appeared in Mono and are distinguished by the matrix numbers XEX 579-1 / XEX 580-1.

EMI sound engineers felt that these early presses were ‘unbalanced’ with unclear bass vocal sounds. The decision was made to halt production whilst the ‘mother plates’ were re-cut. Interesting to note, now they say, “ it was withdrawn for a reason” !!

Today the sound is a matter of personnel taste, making a fascinating piece of Beatle recording history.

CONDITION:

MAIN SLEEVE: is in very good condition++, it is very clean, flat and the front laminate has an excellent shine. The two opening edges are very good, The spine is very good, the ‘R’ on the word ‘Rubber’ is a little scuffed. The rear of the sleeve has the tri flipbacks design. The rear is unlaminated and is very clean and white, there is a small stamp in black ink stating ‘020’ ?, an EMI stamp perhaps ?, I don’t know !.

INNER SLEEVE: is in good condition+, it is the original Emitex polylined (rice paper) sleeve, it is flat and clean with no biro writing. It does have a bit of edge wear to two of the side edges. There is a 25mm dia circle of sticker residue to one side of the inner sleeve. There is a small tear, 25mm to the outside of the die-cut hole one side.

VINYL: is in very good condition and features the original Sixties thick, heavy vinyl, the matrices nos. are - XEX 579-1 and XEX 580-1 making it the very first pressing RARE ‘LOUD’ cut. The Mother/Stampers are: ‘ 1 HM’ and ‘7 GDM’. The audio is good with a few crackles and the odd ‘tick’. It is dark and has a high gloss.

THE LABELS: are in very good condition+, side One has a ‘KT’ embossed onto it. Side one (see photo) has some sticker residue on it, but it is on the black part of the label and doesn’t really notice, the other side, the label is excellent.

I am using the official grading system from Record Collector Magazine.

Grading System

The seven standard condition categories and a description of what each one means are listed below:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
