Description
The Beatles' 'Rubber Soul' (PMC 1267) was released in early December 1965 .....a few days after the end of their UK tour. It swiftly raced to the top of the UK chart, where it remained for nine weeks, three weeks longer than its time at Number 1 in the US. It is an extraordinary album and there is a curious story (which most fans and collectors will know by now) that is attached to the very first [Mono] pressings; also known as the "Loud Cut" pressing.
" George Martin came up with the album's running order on November 16. The following day, Harry Moss cut the mono lacquers, which were immediately sent to Hayes(EMI pressing plant in West London) for manufacture of the metal parts needed to press the records. Shortly into the production run, EMI decided that Moss had cut the album too loud and ceased production. After Moss re-cut mono lacquers on November 19, new metal parts were made, and Hayes resumed pressing the album. The albums pressed with stampers generated from the initial lacquers were not destroyed and can be identified by the "-1" following the XEX 579 (Side 1) and XEX 580 (Side 2) matrix numbers found at six o'clock of the record's trail off areas. Discs pressed with stampers from the re-cut lacquers have a "-2" after the matrix numbers"

Without question, there is a slight difference in the overall sound level during playback. I wouldn't say that it is distracting or inferior to the "corrected" version in any way....just "different". These "Loud Cut" pressings are much harder to come by and almost impossible to find in Near Mint condition. While the copy I am offering is not perfect (far from it) it certainly will satisfy the curious fan/collector and fill that void in their collection until that elusive Near Mint copy comes along.
Cover: Very Good......despite it's age, this laminated jacket is more than acceptable. There is some edge wear, creases, and feathering at the opening...the back shows some age discoloration...but I think we've all seen far, FAR worse examples over the years. Have a good look at the pictures.
Original EMI rice paper-lined inner-sleeve: Very Good....some age discoloration and creases. Seam splits have been expertly repaired with tape by previous owner.
Record: Good ~ Very Good+.....thick and heavy vinyl pressing...and almost incredibly (but not surprisingly) despite the many hairlines, marks, scuffs etc. that are visible under strong light....the playback is quite nice and, at times....very nice. In fact, 7 out of the 14 songs play VG+....while the other 7 are a mixture of Good+ to VG. As usual, 'Michele' grades the lowest at Good (minus).
