The Beatles, SGT PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND 1967 FIRST ISSUE MONO LP WITH RARE FOURTH PROOF GATE-FOLD SLEEVE.
Cat No. PMC 7027.
This very rare unique sleeve! The “Fourth Proof” sleeve represents the earliest possible pressing of the Sgt Pepper cover. The Fourth Proof was the final version of the various ‘prototypes’ that were explored by the Beatles when the cover was being designed. The cover (and text) was approved by the Beatles and an initial very small ‘test’ run was undertaken to make sure everything looked OK. This small test run is characterized by the inverted “Fourth Proof” text in the top right hand corner of the inner gate-fold – just above George Harrison’s head. This is therefore the earliest possible ‘prototype’ (test pressing) cover. On the same fold-back the printed text “AR D1321? was the reference number for the prototype that was used.
Released on the 1st June 1967 and approaching its 50 year Anniversary on the 1st June 2017, this is a superb example with the rare Fourth Proof, Patents Pending Gate-fold Sleeve complete with original Unused Sgt Pepper Cut-Out, and original E.M.I. Stamped Flame Inner Bag.
Side 1 matrix and Stampers, XEX 637-1 & 37 AGR. Side 2 matrix, XEX 638-1 & 4 RHM.
The LP plays with stunning sound quality on all tracks without faults.
Both record labels are in Excellent Plus condition with just a few play signs around the centre of each label. Both vinyl surfaces are also in Excellent Plus condition, clean surfaces to both sides with just a few light superficial surface hairlines.
The flame inner bag stamped E.M.I. is in Excellent condition with light creases and light age toning, without any seam splits The unused Sgt Pepper cut-out is in Near Mint condition.
The Fourth Proof Gate-fold Picture Sleeve is in Excellent to Excellent Plus condition, a very nice undamaged sleeve with just mild corner bumps, all edges and spine edge are undamaged and without any splits.
