1st Mono UK 1967 pressing of The Beatles' 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' (PMC 7027) Lp. Yes, the mix is different from the Stereo version and it is beautiful. Here is an excerpt from the superb 1988 book by Mark Lewisohn titled, 'The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions' (page 108):
" The only real version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the mono version, " says Richard Lush (2nd engineer) The Beatles were there for all the mono mixes. Then, after the album was finished, George Martin, Geoff [Emerick] and I did the stereo in a few days, just the three of us, without a Beatle in sight. There are all sorts of things on the mono, little effects here and there, which the stereo doesn't have."
The sound from this record is perfect.....balanced, detailed, immediate, and timeless. Both the Stereo and Mono versions are essential in truly appreciating the beauty and wonder of this album.
Cover: VG+.....possibly better......the lamination still holds up nicely after all this time. Only the spine shows some wear but the print is still easily legible. The back cover is quite nice and only has some creasing in some spots. The inner gatefold is practically flawless. Though hardly noticeable, there are a few imperfections to a couple of areas on the front cover (though they can only be seen at certain angles) but it's quite inoffensive. The wonderful, rich and vibrant colors make one easily forget these minor issues.
Original (non-psychedelic) Inner-Sleeve: Excellent
Cut-Out Insert: Excellent-......would be perfect if not for a small area of discoloration at the lower right corner.
Record: Ex- to Excellent+.....The thick and heavy vinyl shows only some light hairlines. There is very little surface noise to contend with. It really plays beautifully. Only 2 sections of minor distraction worth mentioning. Occasional light ticks are heard on parts of 'When I'm Sixty-Four'; and during the piano chord die-away at the very, very end of 'A Day In The Life', a bit of surface noise is heard...but I imagine this is very commonly heard during this part of the song. Without question, this is THE cleanest 1st UK Mono pressing of 'Sgt. Pepper' I've ever come across and would be very hard, if not impossible, to beat.
