Description
The Beatles Sgt Peppers 1st Press Mono XEX 637 - 1/ XEX 638 -1
This first mono press copy of Sgt Pepper's has obviously been well played and there are numerous marks and scuffs over both sides.
It playtested reasonably well, with crackling on run-ins and between tracks, and not too much noise on the tracks themselves. There are a few pops and clicks but it plays much better than it looks, which is often the case with 1960s vinyl which is typically heavier and with deeper grooves. Plays through to the runout groove loop. Graded as GOOD+. Sleeve is VG.
Any Sgt Pepper's pressing with XEX 637 - 1/ XEX 638 -1 stampers is generally believed to be from the first pressing. The black and yellow logo label has "The Gramophone Co." in the radial text and "Sold in the U.K. Subject To Resale Price Conditions, See Price Lists" across label at centre, with "Made in Gt. Britain" at foot all printed in silver.
The Garrod & Lofthouse fully laminated gatefold cover has flipback glue-tabs on inner spread and is in VG condition. The spine is good and legible. The laminate is very good with wrinkles but no lifting. There is some age related discolouration and a small annotation on the back underneath the catalogue number.
Matrix / Runout (Side 1, Runout): XEX 637 - 1
Matrix / Runout (Side 2, Runout): XEX 638 - 1
- The original owner has carefully added his own name and phone number to the runout (which is unusual but makes this pressing unique!)
- I’m thinning out my personal record collection and will be offering a wide range of 12” LPs and 7” singles and EPs over the coming weeks.
All have been test played and cleaned using a record cleaning machine. I use the established Record Collector grading system and grade as accurately as possible (a little tough if anything!). Refer to the listing for specific descriptions and see Record Collector Magazine Grades listed below for more details.
All records will be well packed using proper vinyl mailers and stiffeners.
Record Grading Details (adjust up or down with + or -)
Mint (M)
The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet. booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records marked as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
Excellent (EX)
The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
Very Good (VG)
The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects is acceptable
Good (G)
The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc
Fair (F)
The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
