Description
An original very 1st mono press of Pepper from summer 1967 On USA Capitol. Matrix F8/G9. Please note very 1st pressings can be identified by the text on the label for the track 'With A Little Help From Our Friends'. Early copes omitted the 'WITH' - it was added to all the later copies. No 'subsidiary' text on the labels either as you would expect. 'WIDE BODY FONT' - as employed right at the outset. The vinyl comes housed in an original USA 1st mono issue hard-card cover. MANY variations of the cover exist. But if you're after the very 1st example it would look like this one. NO 'Maclens' credit beneath 'splendid time' bottom right on the rear. No mention of 'Nems Enterprises' - same area, but against the spine. So, 100% genuine summer 1967 copy. And remember the 1st copies were mono as the USA switched to stereo earlier than we did in the UK. There's NO cut-outs or flame/psyche inner sleeve.
Vinyl (Vg+/Vg-) Ok, so this copy would not be suitable for someone who is going to freak out at marks. There are a few and a couple on one side are semi-feelable. One is a clear heavy needle drop and is fairly visible. Thankfully the marks, whilst not looking all that great, do not cause as much problem as you might imagine. If you were someone who can compromise on said marks - you could snag yourself a low cost USA mono 1st. When on song I would say this copy is playing real nice - a very solid VERYGOOD+ [for the most part]. Very pleasing. Pretty clean. But the marks mentioned above do cause a couple of issues. One causes a very brief skip in WYWY [no big deal really - over in a flash]. That more noticeable mark mentioned above does sound in the opening moments of WI64. I get about 10 clicks. But I've tested it several times and it does NOT jump. So, providing you can live with these issues playback is very appealing and pretty clean by and large. The only tracks which plays with a bit of elevated background are 'She's Leaving Home' & 'Mr Kite'. These tracks does do exhibit a bit of crackle - but rarely play properly clean anyway. Overall more than worthy of consideration given the vintage.
Cover (Vg) Not too bad really on the face of it. Surfaces are quite nice exhibiting a touch of ageing and just a bit of surface wear along the top edge [as is common]. The interior looks superb - no issues. The spine is pretty good with all text legible. Only minor wear and a bit of grubbiness. Expect a good bit of edge wear. On the bottom of the right hand panel the seam has worn through for six inches. I have tape secured internally so that it does not deteriorate. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
