Description

An original 1st mono press of Pepper on UK Parlophone. Matrix 1/1. Everyone's seen a 1st press of Pepper - but have you witnessed a proper top level copy? Because finding a beautifully preserved copy - is not quite as easy a task as it might seem. For starters NOT all Pepper's were made equal. Even during the 1st year of release you can find considerable variation in pressing weight. I tend to opt for the earliest copies - they were often pressed at 160 grams [like this example]. Now, this really is the best starting place to bag a truly great playing copy. Stampers 1-GAT/2-GDG. But this is just the starting place - you then need to find a perfectly preserved copy. And, remember, this is perhaps the most popular & well known album from the sixties. So, this is usually/often the trickiest thing to find. BUT I'm pleased to report we've snagged a superbly preserved copy, here, take a look at the label shots. They don't all look like that. Note the very consistent colouration, the lack of marks, the relatively untouched spindle hole. This copy is very low-mileage. And that's what you need to find a truly top level copy. The vinyl comes housed in an original mono gatefold cover with exposed flipbacks. The original dark green cut-outs are present, BUT the Fool psyche inner is ABSENT. We're placing the Lp in an original mid sixties Emitex inner sleeve. Not original to the release - but good protection and from the era.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) A beautiful copy which has seen unusually light use for an original Pepper. Under close inspection there are a couple of very light marks per side - but seemingly nothing that will get anywhere near that precious audio. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback with a couple of slight deviations. Intros and inbetweens are super quiet and the audio comes across with top level clarity. Playing this LP is like a trip back to '67. The audio reproduction is breath taking. EMI at the height of their powers - along with the Beatles. It just plays with super vibrancy and a truly quiet background. The early copies have very appealing lolloping base-notes - superb! To find out if you really have a top-level player go to those very demanding tracks. Many really nice looking copies easily trip up on SLH and WI64. SLH in particular is extremely difficult to find playing nice and clean on any copy. But this example is defying the odds - stupendous. In terms of out and out audio - I would say this copy is within the best couple I've ever witnessed. It plays consistently clean throughout...from start to end. Now, that in itself is very very unusual. There's more low-level detail on this copy than 90% of 1st pressings. ALL the tracks which are a total pain to find playing clean.... Think...SLH, WI64, WYWY, ADITL etc... Pretty much 'clean as a whistle'. So, if you're in the market for a show stopping Pepper then do take some time to seriously consider this example. I picked out just a couple of minor ticks per side [e.g. WI64]. Nothing that noticeable - and given the overall level of performance MORE than acceptable. I'd love to say that a copy like this can be found monthly - but unfortunately that is just not the case. YOU will NOT find a copy playing these fussy low-key numbers anywhere near this good. Extremely difficult to meet this standard - on any copy, let alone on an early 1st. ZERO distortion anywhere. Even on the inner grooves. The final chord plays super quiet.
Cover (Ex-) In really nice condition and has not been abused. Front and back are nice and clean and flat with no noticeable issues. Just a couple of minor creases [front - extreme bottom left] - that's all. The interior is clean as you like - beautiful. Minimal edge wear and solid openings. Only the spine is a slight let down. About average I'd say. All text fully legible. Just light wear with a crease running down the centre [as is common]. Overall the cover still retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Vg+) A bit of ageing. No splits. Bag present.
Cut-Outs (Ex) Faultless.
