The Beatles  Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band   stereo PCS 7027

Matrices and stampers; YEX 637-1 (1 GAL) and YEX 638-1  (3 GMA)

FIRST PRESS (UK-1967) STEREO on Parlophone black and yellow label with psychedelic ‘red flame’ inner sleeve and darker green cut out insert, complete!

The GATEFOLD COVER has is an authentic 1967 copy with double flipback in VERY GOOD+ condition. Slight corner wear and storage (ring) wear. Intact spine with some age discolouration. Inside the cover is a small shop sticker from ‘harlequin’ record shops in London (in the top right hand corner), all part of its history and provenance! Excellent strong lamination is intact and there is no writing or other ugly marks.

The cut out insert has probably stayed in the LP for most of its life and is in excellent+ condition. The red psychedelic inner, very fragile, has survived the years well and is in very good condition but has been sellotaped on the bottom seam and has a slight tear at the top. Not perfect but these are so fragile and easily spilt and tear over the years. The record is protected in a substitute inner to preserve the original.

The VINYL LP has very good + audio, with occasional clicks but amazingly for nearly 50 years old, it’s in great playing condition with the stereo mix playing wonderfully loud and clear on my soundcheck. No sticks or skips or loud persistent scratches. A few more audible clicks on ‘When I’m 64’ but nothing too distracting. The long fade out plays click free and the recurring groove at the end is still there! Visually it still retains a lovely black sheen with minor surface scratches only.

Both labels have no marks or writing but do have some spindle wear and trails but certainly not excessive. Side 1 has a slight printing anomaly in that ‘SOLD IN. U.K. ’ Has an extra dot after IN and side 2 does not.

Overall a very nice example of a first press stereo Sgt Pepper with the added bonus of its original shop sticker on the inside of the gatefold cover.
