This Capitol Records promotional copy of The Beatles (White Album) is the continuation of the legendary story related to George Harrison’s trip to Los Angeles and his visit to Capitol Records in 1968. This is how Mal Evans describes the events in his “George U.S. Visit” report in “The Beatles Monthly Book”, Jan. No 66: “Capitol had started to make the master records but as soon as George heard their version he realized they’d done all sorts of technical things to it that altered half the effects! It’s called “compressing” and “limiting”. Anyway they had done it all wrong and if George had not heard it in time, taken the tape away to work on it himself and returned it the way it should be the American LP records might have been a bit of a mess!” This story didn’t end there because the first lacquers with the compressed mastering weren’t destroyed in spite of Harrison’s insistence and somehow were used to make the metal stampers. The copies of “The Beatles” whose matrix stampers end in numbers less than 34 were pressed using these metal stampers and contain the compressed mastering. The most common matrix numbers on these “Lost Harrison Compressed White Album” pressings are A28 / B29. Nevertheless, the copies with the lower matrix numbers do exist. Until yesterday, a copy with the cover numbered 0670319 was listed on eBay and had the lowest matrix numbers I’ve ever seen, S1-B12, S2-B14, S3-B10, S4-B12. This is indeed the historical numbers if it wasn’t due to this copy we’ve listed for auction. This is a new page in “The Lost Harrison Compressed White Album” story. Until the moment you find the second copy like this, the currently listed copy will be considered to be the only Capitol Records promotional copy of this album in the world containing not only the vinyl with the compressed mastering but also the very 1st lacquer numbers -A1 / -A1 on Side 3 and 4. The presence of this compressed vinyl in a promotional copy is a sensation indeed and its collectible value can hardly be exaggerated.

Original cardboard embossed gatefold cover contains a promotional Capitol Records perforated “FREE” punch in the upper right-hand corner of the left panel. The Los Angeles plant cover without a lead character, 0115627. Very 1st label variation, Apple with the Capitol logo perimeter print, contains all of the 7 incorrect song titles. This promotional copy features a full set of promotional memorabilia, which includes a large double-sided 23" x 34" color poster, four 8" x 10" portrait photos, one of each Beatle, having the "Printed in USA" logo in the lower left-hand corner, and an insanely rare 8" x 10" green separator sheet. The album comes with the original Capitol Records plain white die-cut inner sleeves. The full 1st matrix numbers include an identifier of the Los Angeles plant pressing “*” (asterisk) etched on all of the sides and are as follows:

Side 1 – SWBO-1-101-B35 3 * 2

Side 2 – SWBO-2-101-A36 2 *

Side 3 – SWBO-3-101-A-1 2 *

Side 4 – SWBO-4-101-A-1: 1 *

The listing includes an incredibly rare 1st US print original 1968 Maclen Music, Inc “The Beatles” 88-page songbook containing the notes and lyrics to all of the album’s songs along with blue monochrome photos. The glossy cover of the songbook is executed using the same design as the LP cover. The second page of the songbook includes a rubber ink stamp reading “Sheet Music Dept. Music for Everyone 50 W. Sierra Madre, Calif. 356-114” and the last page includes an original outline drawing that was featured in the album’s advert in the 1968 issue of the “Billboard” magazine.

I grade the beautiful promotional cover as Excellent. It’s very clean and doesn’t have any ring wear, splits or writing. The memorabilia set is in Near Mint Minus condition. I grade the condition of the songbook as Excellent and its interior as Near Mint. It’s super clean and only has some light age discoloration spots on the front and back cover. I grade the vinyl as Very Good Plus for Side 1 / 2 / 4 and Excellent Minus for Side 3 as it has a few surface marks. Side 2 has a slightly felt 0.75’ mark on the last track which causes a couple of light pops. The Side 1 / 2 vinyl plays well throughout without any skips and just has some light background noise and occasional static, which along with the pops, most likely could get reduced or go away if the record is professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. Side 3 / 4 plays great throughout without any skips having some light occasional static, which just like in the case with the Side 1 / 2 vinyl most likely could get reduced or go away with the help of a VPI cleaning machine. The labels on all of the four sides are in Mint Minus condition and are completely scuff-, wear- and spindle mark-free. The original Capitol Records inner sleeves are in Mint Minus condition and don’t have any splits or tears.
