This is a nice, original copy of the Beatles White Album, in Stereo and with superb vinyl, which I would grade as Excellent Minus. It has little in the way of surface marks on any of the four sides and barely noticeable spindle rubs on any of the records, suggesting little play in its long life. This has been played, but it is one of the best looking LPs I have seen and I doubt that anyone would fault the superb look of the heavy weight EMI 60s vinyl.

Being a First Press, it has the deep green Apple Labels, too. As stated, this is Top Opening, No. 0436416 stamped below the embossed 'The Beatles', see photos above.

Its all important Mother & Stampers are: Side One Mother '5' & Stamper 'GAG' or '131', Side Two Mother '6' & Stamper 'GMH' or '147', Side Three 'Mother '5' & Stamper 'HG' Being '71' and Side Four Mother '4' & 'Stamper 'TH' or '97'.

The First Press, 'Stereo' The Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve is fully laminated and gatefold, with the correct 'Stereo' in small stamped letters on the reverse, top right, as can just be seen in the photo above. It is all intact, with no real laminate peeling or creasing, just odd patches here and there, but when opened out, a nice, shiny surface on all sides, with just minimal corner and tope wear, as is normal with such a popular record.

It has the black soft central dye cut original inner sleeves, which have the usual signs of some seam splits and one 'down-tear' in the central cut-out, with some creasing, but they are fully original and all there!

The poster and photo cards are not with this LP, as I am sure they were put on the bedroom wall of the proud owner in 1968!

 Ggrading is subjective and I base mine on what I can see and hear and also on The Record Collector's Gude, which is printed below, but just as a guide, as no guide can be definitive and no one person can agree with another. But, with such a nice, rare Stereo issue, with its unique Numbered sleeve, being No. 0436416 and with the sleeve being in really nice, original and intact condition, as well as the obvious advantage of really lovely vinyl, I am confident of an Excellent to Excellent Minus, with the 'Minus' really being me as a picky record fan, due to some surface marks, but not on every side and also not that many. To those unfamiliar with old vinyl, much of any evidence of marks were usually simply in taking the record out of the inner sleeve and putting it back in!

All is all, a very nice, clean example of an increasingly rare collector's record, by The Beatles, with a LOW starting price!

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler."

As well as the above grades, Near Mint is often used as well; this is really for a record that appears new but is known to have been played because the label has light spindle marks or because it has come from a previous owner and is assumed to have been played by them. For records which appear to fall between the accepted grades, + and - are also often added to the grading, with advice on why this may be.

In addition to the basic grading, any individual faults should be noted separately such as if an otherwise Excellent cover has a name written on it, or a 7" single is missing its original centre etc.
