Description
The album up for sale was purchased by myself in 1966 from one of the two local appliance stores in my hometown. At the time I knew nothing about the measures Capitol took in pasting the trunk photo over the original cover. At some time in the early 70s a friend of mine, who liked the Beatles also, told me about the paste over thing. He was always asking to see my album as he was convinced it was a 2nd state copy. I always resisted doing anything as I didn’t want to deface the cover if it turned out to not be a 2nd state album. One day while he was over and looking at the album he pointed out what looked like another cover underneath. It could be seen at one of the edges where the paste over was peeling up a bit. I didn’t know anything about peeling, but I fired up the tea kettle and patiently steamed the paste over off. Nothing more was done to the cover. I kept the trunk cover slick also. I have always stored my albums with clear plastic sleeves to protect the covers. I have also used the Discwasher system to clean my albums.
The photos here are scans. Unfortunately I had to piece together 4 separate scans for the cover and back so there are tint differences in the scans. I also adjusted the look so it would appear right on Windows machines. This makes the images a bit lighter than they really are on a Mac.
The front cover has no ring wear. The white border is showing it’s age as it is discolored somewhat all the way around. In the upper right hand area there is some paste over residue that is 3/8 in. at it’s widest and 5/8 in. in length. Just above that - right across from the word Beatles - is a circular tear roughly a quarter inch in diameter along with a few small defects. In the bottom left hand corner are three small remnants of paste over fibers on John’s right pant leg. The bottom right hand corner is crumpled a bit. There is also what I assume to be glue residue on the cover. It is evidenced by a slight shininess when viewed at an angle in appropriate light. The scans show this as slightly lighter horizontal lines across the cover.
The back cover shows some ring wear at the top portion of the cover. It is somewhat soiled/dirty from handling. The number 3 is next to the RIAA logo - Jacksonville?? The spine has a split one inch long and centered. Top and bottom seams are intact.
The slip cover is orange with the lower right hand corner creased. The bottom seam has a centered 3 inch split which has been taped for a length of 1 1/4 inches in the center. The other two seams are intact.
The record is shiny with light scuffs on side one and two. Also some very light scratches on both sides. There is a pressing blemish 1/8 inch in on Nowhere Man. There are also some pressing blemishes that look like very small dents in Dr. Robert and Act Naturally. None of these have ever affected playback for me.
The label has spindle tracks close to the spindle hole that can be seen in the right light when viewing at an angle. The rest of the label is in great shape, clean colors and printing.
The trunk photo paste over, which I’m including, has a half inch tear on the left hand side which is centered and nearly horizontal. It has yellowed with age and unfortunately suffered some water damage in 1993. It was stored separate from the album which was a mistake on my part. Consequentially there is a water stain that runs through the center of the slick. I believe this album would be graded somewhere between VG and VG+ with the record grading a bit lower than the sleeve.
