Just like you, we couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw this cover for the first time among the other records offered to us for consignment by the relatives of the collector who lived in Los Angeles. This impressive one-of-a-kind 2nd State Butcher cover doesn’t need any description as the “Trunk” paste over slick is so thin that it shows almost all of the details of the Butcher artwork underneath it. The origin of this cover remains a mystery but it’s impossible to ignore the “Sample” rubber ink stamp located at the top of the back cover and the fact that the cover didn’t come with the vinyl. This example was stored in the collection only as a cover. The RIAA “6” number located at the bottom right corner of the back cover identifies this cover as the one designated for the Capitol Records pressing plant in Los Angeles. The West Coast covers were made by the Indiana-based company Imperial Packing Co., Inc. If we assume that this cover with the rubber ink stamp belonged to the office of Imperial Packing Co., can this be a test print cover with a sample thin stock paste over slick that didn’t fully block the Butcher artwork? Yes or no, perhaps we will never find out. When you hold this cover in your hands, a fantastic feeling appears as if the whole story of the Butcher cover including the initially negative public’s reaction to the album’s design, its withdrawal from sale, the creation of the new “Trunk” paste over slick and using it to cover the Butcher artwork, merged into one whole on this cover.

The cover is graded as Excellent. It's very clean and doesn't have any splits, wear, scuffs, writing, residue or ring wear, perhaps just only a hint of it at the top left of the back cover. There's some light age discoloration along the edges as well as some super light soiling on the corners. The top left corner of the front cover has a few very light age discoloration spots. The sturdy spine contains a fully readable text.
