VINTAGE COPIES OF THE MEMOS FROM THE CAPITOL DISTRIBUTION MANAGER, JOE SOBECK AND PRESS & INFORMATION SERVICES MANAGER, RON TEPPER

Up for auction are three original items that have a direct relation to Robert Whitaker, the British photographer famous for his work with The Beatles, in this case the “Butcher” photo session that took place at the photographer’s Chelsea Studio on March 25th 1966. One of the photos from this session became the “Butcher” paste over slick on The Beatles “Yesterday and Today” album with another two photos being published in the “DISC and Music Echo” magazine, one in the advertisement of “The Beatles Paperback Writer” single in the issue dated June 4th, 1966, and the second one as the front cover photo in the issue dated June 11th, 1966 with the headline “Beatles: What a Carve-Up!” becoming the first color photo publication from the session in any printed issue in the world. Why an alternate shot, different from the LP cover, was given to the magazine is not known, and another interesting feature would be the fact that when printed, the photo was flipped. The story of these examples is no less unique than the magazines themselves as they were the personal copies of Robert Whitaker. We would like to thank Richard Jackson from Solihull, West Midlands, UK who sold these examples to us and told the following story:

- “The magazines you now own came off his widow, his 2nd wife, who he married in the early 1970s. I advertise the Beatles memorabilia at The Ardingly Antiques Fair in West Sussex (UK), Susie approached me as she stands in the same outside building selling linen namely the Pig + Sheep (Robins Building). She promised me a suitcase full of paperwork owned by Robert, which had newspaper clippings as he used to make collages, as well as complete newspapers and magazines. He kept some of them that featured his photographs. According to his wife, the family have loads of stuff but its being dispersed amongst them. I’m unlikely to get anything else but I’m grateful they could part with a suitcase with the items from his archive.”

Besides the “Paperback Writer” single advertisement, the June 4th issue also contains an article dedicated to the single including the review of a critic as well as the listeners. The article contains a black and white photo used on the back cover of the “Revolver” album which was also taken by Whitaker. The magazine dated June 11th also contains an article dedicated to the scandalous photo session as well as an exclusive interview with Paul McCartney, which was promoted in the June 4th issue right next to the article about the “Paperback Writer” single. Going back to the LP, pressed at the Capitol plant in Los Angeles, CA, this copy is in amazing factory sealed condition with the perfectly visible V” neck detail of Ringo’s black sweater underneath the paste-over slick. The back cover contains the RIAA “6” factory identifier at the bottom right corner. This 1st pressing factory sealed album comes with the vintage scan copies of the memos from the Capitol Records national distribution manager, Joe Sobeck, and the Press & Information Services manager, Ron Tepper, as well as an article from The Boston Globe dated Saturday, June 25, 1966 which goes into details about the situation with the controversial cover and its aftermath.

Incredible factory sealed copy is in vintage Mint condition with the fully intact shrink wrap containing the original breathe holes and not having any splits, tears or missing pieces. Robert Whitaker’s personal magazines are in great vintage condition only having some light signs of use and occasional age discoloration. The vintage scan copies of the memos as well as the article from the Boston Globe are also in a very nice condition.
