Description
The Beatles "Abbey Road" very first variant pressing, issued October 1, 1969 in amazing condition (this is a rare contract pressing by RCA evidenced by the indented 2 3/4"-diameter groove that is 1 1/4" from the spindle hole). Abbey Road was the last album recorded by The Beatles. It was issued in America on October 1, 1969 (England September 26). It was quickly certified Gold and sold over 3 million copies in a little over a month (as of 2002 it had certified sales of 9 million units). The very first covers (manufactured by Shorewood Packaging, Inc.) involved printing the cover directly onto white posterboard. It was later realized there was no need to have a coated surface on the inside, so later covers have a gray cardboard surface on the inside. The first batch of covers (SC1A) do not list Her Majesty on the back (nor on the label). On the front of the original covers, the small square storm drain is visible. At a point where new covers had to be printed, it was decided to use Queens Litho (instead of Shorepak), who used the original artwork but enlarged the front photo (thereby showing less of the crosswalk and obscuring the storm drain). Both the cover and the record are in solid Excellent condition for being exactly 50 years old. There are just a few hairline creases here-and-there but very minor.
