This 1985 compilation captures Elvis Costello at full sharpness, wit, and range, whether he's spitting out barbed pub rock (“Pump It Up”), plumbing noir balladry (“Almost Blue”), or distilling working-class disillusion into anthems (“Oliver’s Army”). Released on Columbia as a curated American intro to Costello's best late-’70s and early-’80s material, it reads like a crash course in New Wave’s literary wing.
This copy features the striking torn-paper design, a bold blue-and-pink sleeve that’s as clever and punchy as Costello’s lyrics. One of the few collections that holds up as an album in its own right—sequenced for flow, not just hits.
