THE BEST OF MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT Vanguard VSD 19.20 Recorded Live in Concert, 1965 Re-Released on Unknown Date Gatefold
This record is in EX/M- condition. The cover is VG.
The cover has a fairly visible ring mark. One top corner of the back sleeve is scuffed open about 1/8" deep and 1" long but is almost invisible from the front. The gatefold photos of John Hurt are in excellent condition and are by Dave Gahr, the talented photographer for the fan mag Sing Out. The songs were recorded live at a concert at Oberlin College in 1965 and we believe the back sleeve gatefold photo was taken at Newport's Folk Festival in 1964, making the photos and the singing contemporary.
We have been unable to date the release of this recording. Discogs has not been of help, although it is generally a goldmine of information.
The album title is misleading since these takes were from a live concert and while they are exciting recordings and renditions, a true selection of John Hurt's "best" songs would certainly have been comprised of renditions from other performances as well as studio recordings.
John Hurt has been called a "songster" as opposed to a "blues" player. His playing is fairly idiosyncratic, with more finger-picking than many Delta blues players and more emphasis on the lyrics of his songs.
But despite these somewhat picky qualifications, this is a delightful album - a document of one of the country's best traditional performers and guitar players in concert before a welcoming crowd Other information is in the specifications and short comment on the condition that appear at the beginning of this listing.
