Brothers was recorded primarily at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama, and the result of the duo is an even more intense, soulful set that also includes a cover of Jerry Butler's Never Gonna Give You Up. The appearances are imaginative and passionate: Dan Auerbach extends his vocal range up to falsetto on the title tracks "Everlasting Light" and "The Only One"; "Howlin 'For You" starts with a drum riff in the style of Gary Glitter and the chorus invites you to sing along. The pieces offer a surprising amount of lyrical openness and more than just a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between brave swagger and bluesy brooding.
Danger Mouse returned to co-produce "Tighten Up" on Brothers, but for the most part the duo were on their own during their 10-day stint at Muscle Shoals. Additional recordings took place in Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound System in Akron and The Bunker in Brooklyn. The album was mixed by sound engineer Tchad Blake, a veteran of the sessions with Los Lobos, Pearl Jam and Peter Gabriel. Carney: "The way he approaches mixing is the same as we approach music making. We respect the past and are in the present at the same time ".
