Description
The Black Pirates play two hot tunes, "My Old Girl's My New Girl Now" and "Roll Up the Carpets," on Paramount 20671. "Girl" is a pretty tune with an alto sax obbligato behind the vocal, and good trumpet and trombone solos. "Roll" has no vocal, and good banjo, trombone, piano, trumpet solos.
According to Lord, the personnel is possibly drawn from Ray Miller's Orchestra, composed of (tp), (tb), (cl,as), (cl,ts), (p), prob. Bill Haid (bj,g), (tu), (d), with an unknown vocal on "My Old Girl" and Diana Dell singing on "Roll Up." In fact, H. Greenwood sings on "Girl" and "Roll Up" is instrumental. Recorded in Chicago in October 1928.
This record is in V- condition generally, with light, small scratches throughout that create background crackle and a few pops. The "Roll" side has a scratch that skips before the music starts, and ticks very briefly thereafter; the remedy is to use a little extra weight, in which case the scratch will pass without incident. Needle runs on the "Girl" label and some paper loss around the spindle hole on "Roll." Despite these flaws, there is still good music to be enjoyed here.
