The Bouncing Souls - Anchors Aweigh [LP]
Epitaph Records EPI 866691 045778666911 LP Punk
In a contemporary landscape where what passes for 'punk' is often little more than a watered-down, mega-mall version of the mighty music that once horrified authority figures the world over, it's nice to know that some bands can still rock with the same pre-irony, heart-on-the-sleeve sensibility that characterized the genre's greatest moments. On ANCHORS AWAY, the Bouncing Souls forego faddish Blink 182-esque smarminess in favor of a holy racket that sounds like the best mid-1980s CBGB's matinee that never was. In addition, the band has a keen sense of melody and guitar texture that perfectly frame the songs' '77 Clash-like shout-a-long choruses. Best of all, vocalist Pete Steinkopf spits out the lyrics with a desperate sincerity rarely heard since the heyday of Black Flag and Husker Du. Young bucks take note: Green Day may have lighted the mainstream punk fire, but the Bouncing Souls are keeping the spirit of this once-noble genre burning bright.
The Bouncing Souls: Greg Ahonzio (vocals); Pete Steinkopf (guitar, background vocals); Bryan Kienlen (keyboards, bass, background vocals); Michael McDermott (drums). Producers: John Seymour, Bryan Kienlen, Pete Steinkopf. Recorded at Long View Farm, Brookfield, Massachusetts and Water Music Studios, Hoboken, New Jersey.

Record Grading
Mint (M): New condition.
Near Mint (NM): Nearly perfect, a record with no obvious signs of wear, a perfect sleeve with no more than the most minor defects and signs of slight handling.
Very Good Plus (VG+): A very good plus record will show signs that it was played, but was taken good care of by the previous owner. Record surface may show slight signs of wear or minor scuffs that do not affect play. Picture sleeves may have slight wear, lightly turned up corners.
Very Good (VG): A very good record will show groove wear and may have a few vinyl imperfections which will affect the sound. Picture sleeves will show slightly more wear with perhaps a frayed top edge, ring wear or seam breakdown.
Good (G) / Good Plus (G+): A good record will show significant wear and /or scratches, but will play through without skipping. It will have considerable surface noise. Picture sleeves may have seam splits @ bottom & spines, tape, writing, ring wear, stickers and other defects that will start to overwhelm the item. A good or good plus item is usually acquired to fill a hole in a collection until a better copy comes along.
