Description
Some albums define a moment. Others quietly predict the future.
Offered here is an original 1980 U.S. Winchester pressing of The Age of Plastic, the landmark debut album from The Buggles. Released on Island Records, this groundbreaking record introduced the world to “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the song that would forever become part of music history when its video was chosen as the very first music video broadcast on MTV at the network’s launch on August 1, 1981.
Long before MTV changed the way the world experienced music, Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes were already pushing the boundaries of pop production, blending new wave, synth-pop, progressive rock, and studio experimentation into an album that was years ahead of its time. While “Video Killed the Radio Star” became an international hit, The Age of Plastic rewards listeners far beyond its signature track with standout songs including “Living in the Plastic Age,” “Kid Dynamo,” “Clean, Clean,” “Astroboy (And the Proles on Parade),” and “Johnny on the Monorail.”
The influence of this album reaches far beyond The Buggles themselves. Trevor Horn would become one of the most celebrated producers of the modern era, helping shape the sound of artists including Yes, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Seal, ABC, and many others. Geoff Downes would go on to join Yes before becoming a founding member of the multi-platinum supergroup Asia.
This offering is an original 1980 U.S. Winchester pressing, a desirable early domestic pressing sought after by collectors who prefer original-era releases over later reissues.
