Description
Whatever momentum was started with their 1967 debut (itself a schizoid excursion bearing Spector-ish production numbers, baroque introspective ballads & another side emphasizing R & B standards), A SLICE OF THE CAKE was their 2nd & last release in 1968.
The Cake (Barbara Morillo, Eleanore Baroonshian, Jeanette Jacobs) were pretty much represented by Barbara Morillo as lead vocalist on the debut. On A SLICE OF THE CAKE, Baroonshian & Jacobs take 3 lead vocal solo spots each, all sounding like solo material instead of a group collaboration. The album has a rush quality to it, Decca Records seeming to try to milk the cash cow & release anything they could find including an outtake off their debut (“Who Will Wear The Crown”).“Walkin’ The Dog – Something’s Got A Hold On Me – Big Boy Pete”is a decent demo reminiscent of their debut’s R & B side.
“Baby It’s Me” is the debut 1967 charter that got them on The Smothers Brothers show & is worth checking out on Youtube for their act. Watching a dazed Jeanette Jacobs standing stock still during the performance while her band mate cohorts are dancing & seeming to enjoy themselves has to be one of the most oddball viewings imaginable. Jacobs gained some semi fame footnote in rock & roll history by being one of Jimi Hendrix’s girlfriends & later co vocalist on GINGER BAKER’S AIR FORCE’s live debut. She married Traffic reed man Chris Wood & died in 1982. Baroonshian died at the age of 66.
