The Chiffons’ final major hit, a Top 10 smash from summer of 1966, ”Sweet Talking Guy” was a long way from the innocent trilling of the girls’ earlier recordings. The harmonies with which the song fades are themselves a masterpiece-in-the-making, while the counter-melody is as catchy as the lead one, all adding up to a smooth soul romp that was as indebted to period Motown and British Invasion stylings as any of the era’s more “contemporary” acts… the Chiffons were, after all, already veterans of the scene by now, with a steady stream of hits that dated back to 1960. But ”Sweet Talking Guy” proved that they could effortlessly adapt, its sawing strings and dramatic instrumentation sliding easily in alongside the better-feted production dramas of the Spectors, Martins and Talmys of the age. Neither were its charms purely “of the time.” Reissued in the UK in spring 1972, ”Sweet Talking Guy” delivered an utterly unexpected #4 hit, and an entire generation would grow up remembering the song as no less potent a musical milestone than ”Amazing Grace”, ”Without You” and ”Back Off Boogaloo”, the three singles that held the song off the #1 slot that season.
