Description
Step back into 1956 — the year The Coasters burst out of the Los Angeles night with that sly, theatrical R&B pulse that would soon define an era. This original ATCO maroon-label pressing (catalog 45-6064) pairs “Turtle Dovin’” with the group’s burning debut side, “Down in Mexico,” both penned by the legendary Lieber & Stoller.
This copy comes from the private stash of a legendary Detroit crate-digger and one-time DJ, a man who preserved his records the way some folks preserve letters from old lovers. His marks are here — a penciled “1956” and faint notation on the label — the quiet fingerprints of a life spent in dim bars and bright dancehalls, cueing up 45s for rooms full of strangers.
Condition:
Record is VG visually with scuffs and sleeve wear, but retains good gloss. No deep gouges. Labels show surface wear and writing (see photos). Plays with vintage character — a little surface noise, but nothing that overshadows The Coasters’ swagger.
Matrix numbers visible: S-1858 / S-1860 (hand-etched).
An honest survivor from the dawn of rock & roll — a piece of American rhythm-and-storytelling that still swings.
