A four-piece (Trish, Jean, Peter and John – no surnames are listed on the sleeve),
with shared vocals.
I’ve not been able to discover much about the County Folk themselves.
They may have been from Liverpool, or from South Lancashire;
the LP itself was privately pressed (with a Birkenhead address on the sleeve).
There was very probably no later reissue, and certainly no later CD reissue.
VINYL: VG+
The LP plays well and quite cleanly throughout. The LP has had a VPI cleaning.
There is a little occasional slight surface noise, and the occasional slight click,
but nothing at all intrusive or that should interfere with your listening pleasure.
(I do play grade all LPs and try to give an objective assessment).
The music is vocal-dominated folk (a little reminiscent, perhaps,
of the Young Tradition or the Watersons) with fairly minimal instrumental
backing, so therefore the recording has plenty of sonic ‘space’;
however, given this, I found it a very acceptable listen.
Some light surface marks, but no major scuffs or scratches.
Stamped matrices CF 323 A/B in dead wax.
Both vinyl and labels look very presentable.
Both labels are clean and intact, with no marks or writing. Slight signs of ageing, and slight fading. Some visible spindle marks on both labels, but not unslightly. Little centre hole wear
There is a white and red ‘Purchase Tax’ stamp on label, so probably very few copies made –
Purchase Tax was the UK precursor of VAT, and until 1973 LPs were subject to this.
(Major label LPs would have tax codes stamped in the dead wax; small pressings such as this would have an adhesive stamp). However a small pressing of 99 copies or fewer was exempt, and therefore many private pressings were only made in these small quantities. It is quite likely that a relatively few copies of this LP were pressed, and were most likely sold by the band themselves.
SLEEVE: VG+
Glossy thin card sleeve, with narrow edges. Only slight edge wear and very little corner bumping. No splits, no tears. No writing. Some light ring wear front and back, and a couple of light ‘thumb creases’, mainly on opening edge. A couple of tiny edge creases, but very mild, given the thin card. Some minor surface wear and slight patina of age, but the sleeve still looks very presentable. (See pictures).
A decent playing copy of a hard-to-find UK folk LP - no reserve and a modest starting price.
