The DC5 were so underrated and so spectacular. It’s interesting: They were, in fact, bigger than The Beatles for a short time. They had a movie out, Catch Us If You Can, while The Beatles had A Hard Day’s Night. They were bigger than The Beatles and they had their own sound. The Beatles had the Liverpool sound, and the DC5 had the Tottenham sound. Their music had a kind of relentless drumming. Their lead singer, Mike Smith, looked like he belonged in The Beatles. He looked right, he played keyboards and had a spectacular voice. Looked great, sounded great.
The Dave Clark Five reached the Top 40 17 times between 1964 and 1967 with memorable hits like "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," "Because," and a remake of Bobby Day's "Over and Over," as well as making more appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show than any other English act.
The Dave Clark 5 appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show no less than 18 times between 1964 and 1967, more than any other British Invasion group. And yet, Britain’s busiest band still found the time to explore. In October 1964, several months after their post-Beatles Ed Sullivan Performance, the Dave Clark 5 released ‘Any Way You Want It’, which was featured on the band’s fourth studio album Coast To Coast. The track has been described as one of the first examples of psychedelic rock, arriving two years before The Byrds released ‘Eight Miles High’ in 1966.
The DC5 were distinguished from their British contemporaries by their larger-than-life production, Clark's loud stomping drum sound, and Mike Smith's leathery vocals.
In March 2008, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Dave Clark Five had 12 Top 40 hits in the UK between 1964 and 1967, and 17 records in the Top 40 of the US Billboard chart.
