Album Notes
Recorded Chicago 1933.Personnel: Alton Delmore, Rabon Delmore (vocals, guitar).Arranger: The Delmore Brothers.

While Alton and Rabon Delmore aren't nearly as mythologized in country music lore as the Monroes or the Louvins, these sons of Alabama tenant farmers as good as wrote the book on two-part harmony singing of blues-infected mountain songs, initiating a country sub-category that still stands. Coming on the heels of Jimmie Rodgers' blue yodels and the Carter Family's newly minted songbook, the Delmores added a proto-bluegrass approach to both, spending the mid-'30s on the Grand Ole Opry cementing the folky country tradition into a coherent form.

Weary Lonesome Blues is a collection of their first RCA recordings, when the Delmores first fused the blues to nuggets of hillbilly wisdom. Full of verses inherent to gospel hymns and images of escape from the rural lives they soundtracked (specifically, rivers and railroads), these songs are Depression-era communiques from the white South--artistry and tradition to Woody Guthrie's anti-authoritarian reportage--as commercial recordings. They also exhibit a greater rhythmic flexibility than most of the Delmores' acoustic contemporaries, hinting at a boogie the brothers would turn into electric neo-rockabilly over the next decade.
