Description
1969 was a tumultuous year for The Doors. After their infamous March 1st Miami concert (where it was alleged that Jim Morrison "exposed" himself on stage) virtually all their tour dates were canceled because no promoter felt safe hiring them to play at a venue. The band hit hard times, which is why their next album is all the more impressive because it was so good. Released in February of 1970, 'Morrison Hotel' ( EKS-75007 ) was The Doors' 5th studio album and I consider it to be one of their best. Beautifully produced by Paul Rothchild, it has all the elements that made this band so great....strong melodies, bluesy and psychedelic, unforgettable lyrics....even with The Doors "brand" at an all-time low, the critics could not deny that the album was sensational.
The copy I am offering is a 1st U.S. pressing and specifically one that was pressed at the West Coast 'Monarch' plant in Los Angeles; and these pressings rarely turn up. If you were going out to buy this record in February/March of 1970 in California (where the band was from), this is the copy you would have found in stores. Because this album was so well recorded, most pressings of this title sound good. However, there is a significant difference in the overall soundstage and fidelity between the VERY 1st pressings and ones that came after or were pressed at other plants. First of all, the audio is somewhat "louder"....more detail is heard in the guitar and keyboards....there is more "snap" in the percussion....there is virtually no distortion even at loud volume. This is the way this album was meant to sound.
This listing is for all those fans and audiophiles who have been waiting for an archive quality specimen of this fabulous album by one of the greatest bands of all time....it is truly an exceptional copy and extremely rare in this condition.
Condition of Gatefold Jacket: Near Mint.....as good as you'll probably ever find this cover. Due to the mat, "crude" textured" paper used for these early pressings, most copies are found with paper loss, ring-wear, stains, and scuffing. This one has escaped all those problems....a near-perfect example of this iconic jacket.
Condition of Original Inner-Sleeve: Near Mint....most, if not all early copies will have this glossy black inner with the Elektra Records logos on one side, and photos of the new Elektra Recording studios on the other. This one is in exceptional shape with NO SPLITS!
Condition of Record: Near Mint.....a lovely shine to both sides....only faint superficial markings and hairlines can be distinguished under very strong light. It almost looks unplayed ....perfect labels....no spindle marks....I've listened to this record from start to finish, and I can assure you it sounds incredible....you will be hard-pressed to find a better sounding copy of this classic.
