Various Artists - The Excello Story

(Blue Horizon 2683 007 1972 UK Double LP)

Fine double album of recordings from the American Excello label. Mostly recorded between 1953 and 1962 but there’s one track as late as 1970. Each side of the album shows a different aspect of the music released by the label, side 1 is electric jump blues with an R&B twist, this is the very beginnings of rock and roll. Side 2 is straighter deeper blues, side three shows the poppier side of the label and the final side of the album moves back to the blues with a mixtures of straight blues and RnB, loads of informative sleeve notes and pictures of the artists inside the gatefold.

Sleeve:

Standard gatefold design made of nice thick card by E J Day of London in very nice shape throughout.

The front sleeve is really nice, it‘s extremely clean with no tears, creases or writing anywhere, there’s the merest hint of a circular impression where the discs sit but that apart for a black unlaminated sleeve of this age this is as good as you could possibly hope for.

The rear sleeve is again pretty much perfect. Again, very clean with no tears, writing or creases anywhere.

Inside the gatefold is pretty much perfect, very clean with no hint of wear anywhere, no writing no tears no creases, just as nice as you could want.

The spine is thick, clean and wide and totally unworn with all of the writing clearly readable.

The top seams are totally unworn.

The bottom seams are also totally unworn.

Record:

The discs are also both in beautiful condition and play fantastically. They’re typical Polydor pressings of that period in that the vinyl isn’t the thickest but they are fine pressings with good sound quality. The discs are both vey very clean and have obviously not been played much and been well cared for whne they have been played., both have that lovely dark sheen you look for when buying records and under normal light they both look perfect with no surface marks at all visible on either disc. When held under a harsh lamp the high standards continue with still no marks visible at all across all four sides.

All four labels are in perfect condition with no witing, tears or stickers anywhere and all of the writing clearly readable. The matix numbers stamped into the dead wax are 2937 001 A1 & B1 and 2937 002 A1 & B1.

Both records play great throughout all four sides with a clean clear sound that just comes leaping out of the speakers. There is no hint of any groovewear or distortion and no surface noise evident at all for the whole double album, even between tracks is perfectly silent. A lot of records of this age had a hard life as they were viewed as disposable product rather than collectors items of the future so they were played with equipment we’d shudder at the thought of using today and handled very roughly, this copy has seen no such abuse and the few times it has been played were obviously on a good quality deck with a well cared for stylus. I’m not the greatest blues fan in the world but I thoroughly enjoyed playing both of these albums and while this isn’t one of the really rare Blue Horizon albums it’ll still be a while before you see another copy this good.
