ITEM
70’s American FAME/Capitol Heavy Cardboard Gatefold Sleeve STEREO pressing of The Fame Gang’s ‘Solid Gold from Muscle Shoals’ L.P. (Catalogue Reference: Fame/Capitol SKAO-4200). I would guess this is the original pressing of this however, I never like using the term ‘original’ with American pressings. The gatefold sleeve is certainly heavy duty and this tends to suggest an early 70s date for manufacture rather than a mid or late 70s pressing. There is a certain flexibility to the vinyl pressing but it still has a ‘weight’ to it. Unusually, there is no cut-out or cut-corner on the sleeve.
CONDITION: EXCELLENT (VINYL) / EXCELLENT+ (SLV)
My grading of the vinyl is definitely on the cautious side. I’d be very surprised if this had been played more than a couple of times at most (it definitely has been played because there is a single spindle ‘drag’ on each label). It is quite a good quality American pressing. There are a couple of shadowy, superficial surface scuffs on each side which I believe are a by-product of the manufacturing process. There is no depth to these marks and they only really become obvious when the vinyl is angled under an intense light. Upon withdrawing the vinyl from the paper sleeve it is immediately obvious that this copy has never seen heavy play and the surfaces retain a certain ‘sheen’ to them. This is a really nice copy! I really like these heavy duty American card sleeves and it is such a shame that over the years economising meant that they got thinner and thinner. The top left-hand corner and the two bottom corners have received knocks. There is a tiny suggestion of ring-wear but as you can see from the attached images that you have to look quite hard for this. The information on the spine is still crystal clear. There are some sporadic impressions in the cardboard with the most prominent being on the rear of the sleeve in the bottom left-hand corner (which might be visible in the attached image). There is a minimal amount of sticker residue and loss of print in the top right-hand corner. Basically, the flaws are all really quite minor and this doesn’t look like an over 40 year old record and it is fairly obvious it hasn’t been handled much.
FINAL COMMENT
Not an easy item to come by in the U.K. and this is a really super copy. Please check my other auctions for a large run of R n B and Soul collectables in similarly immaculate condition. Save me as a favourite seller as there is plenty more where this came from! Overseas buyers welcome!
