I am selling this classic album. The vinyl is in excellent condition and plays very well. The outer cover is worn to fair as you can see from the photos. This album is over 50 years old.
The record with the purple label and the matrix etching PE-5603-B-IB confirms this is a rare 1973 original US first pressing of The J.B.'s classic funk album "Doing It to Death".
- The First Issue Indicator: The purple People Records label featuring silver text and the black-and-white "people" logo represents the definitive 1973 initial release. Later 1970s reissues transitioned to a brown label style, while modern 21st-century reissues often print on colored purple vinyl itself instead of a standard black vinyl disc.
- The "IB" Runout Variance: In the early 1970s, major labels like Polydor/People utilized several regional pressing plants simultaneously to keep up with demand. The "IB" etching signifies the exact mastering engineer or regional plant variant responsible for cutting that specific production run.
- Artist Discrepancy: A fun quirk of this specific pressing is that the outer jacket credits the album strictly to "The J.B.'s", but the purple center labels attribute the music to "Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s".
