- Dr. John's Spin Factory is sending some love to those who wish they could have been there in 1998 at the Bop Stop record shop in Kalamazoo Michigan to buy this fine, brand new, promo copy of "Munki," album #6 from The Jesus and Mary Chain, for a mere $15.99 (oh yes, those were the days--when CD sales seemed destined to put the LP in its grave)! It does amaze me how the times they have-been-a-changin'...and in many more ways than just record prices or the resurgence of vinyl. What I want to know is, where are they now? I don't mean TJAMC, but the makers of such ground breaking music, the new, inspired, innovative bands and musicians that truly move you, that have visceral impact on your central nervous system, that change your head and what gets your foot tapping and your arm reaching to pick the tone arm up at the end of the record and put it back at the beginning. ("I want to hear it...again!") This album, this band, had that level of impact on my head, on my habits, on my tone arm. Here with a few more juicy words about this double LP set is Mr. Jason Ankeny of Allmusic:
- "As befits an album bookended by tracks titled "I Love Rock'n'Roll" and "I Hate Rock'n'Roll," the Jesus and Mary Chain's Sub Pop label debut, Munki, is schizophrenic and impassioned, a record that both summarizes the band's career to date and cleans the slate for their future. Virtually each of the 17 tracks here echoes a prior moment in the Chain's existence, moving at breakneck pace from the volcanic noise of their earliest material to the bleak grace of Darklands, through to the sleek, supercharged pop of Automatic -- even Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval makes a cameo, as she did on Stoned & Dethroned. - Note that this album is NOS = new old stock = SEALED! It appears that in 1998 the label, Sub Pop, made more 'promo' copies than they had radio stations to give them to, so instead of peeling off the promo copy labels, they placed a plain, white, blank, rectangular, label over the promo sticker and sent them to record stores (such as the Bop Stop) to sell in that fashion. In any case, this is a first edition copy, and it sounds fabulous!
- For those who like good surprises, when you order an LP from Dr. John's Spin Factory, you will find a second LP in the package. The purpose for including a second album is strictly for packing purposes. The intent is to provide more protection for your highly prized purchase. As for this second record, it will be an old radio station copy from long ago. Back in the 1980s and 1990s I was a (volunteer) DJ at my college radio station, WIDR in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Because our studio was pretty dinky (we had limited storage area for albums), we continually had to make room for new albums. Which meant, we had to discard older records on a regular basis. So, the second album you would receive was one that I retrieved (with the manager’s blessing) from the throw-out bin. Should you want to play this record, and I’m sure it will sound at least half-way decent, the problem you will face will be that the spindle hole has been drilled out to be larger. (This practice cut down on theft from the studio.) All this means is, you will need to center the record manually. A pain, yes. And, hey! It’s free! Finally, I will do my best to include a second, free record that is as similar in genre as the one you purchased, though that may not always be possible.
