"Darklands" marks a significant evolution in The Jesus and Mary Chain's sound, showcasing a more mature and melodic approach while exploring themes of despair and longing.
Released in 1987, "Darklands" is the second studio album by The Jesus and Mary Chain, following their groundbreaking debut, "Psychocandy." The album represents a stylistic shift, moving away from the raw, feedback-laden sound of their first album to a more polished and melodic pop aesthetic. This change has been met with mixed reactions, as some fans appreciate the growth while others miss the chaotic energy of their earlier work.
"Darklands" features a cleaner production quality compared to "Psychocandy," with the band opting for a more structured sound. The use of drum machines instead of live drumming contributes to this polished feel. Critics have noted that the album's sound is reminiscent of power pop, drawing comparisons to bands like The Velvet Underground and Big Star. The melodies are more accessible, yet the lyrical content remains dark and introspective, reflecting themes of existential despair and romantic longing.
