Back in 1980, my business partner Dare and I decided to create a label, as a spin-off from our indie record store...we both had girlfriends who were lead singers in bands, and our recently separated Radio Birdman mates had formed bands, along with other friends who'd done the same...and we loved them all, but no major label was gonna touch them...so Phantom Records the label, was born. Now that's not something I'm specifically crowing about here...more just so you undertsand why I own an item like this...and in fact, KNOW the details of its existence.

Anyway, this record below is something I've held onto since it first came into my hands from the pressing plant back then:

ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING?:    ...Yes, it is...but what makes this unique, is the cover. When stock arrived from the pressing plant, they came in boxes of 100 (the first run of this one was 500), and it was always a pretty exciting thing opening the boxes...we were like kids at Christmas busting to look inside, but in each case, with a massive amount of pride and thrill at our new release. I remember opening the first box of the Kelpies singles and almost immediately spotting this one solitary thin white aberration squeezed in there amongst them...the albino of the litter...somehow the tones of turquoise blue had NOT been printed onto it. We scrambled through the other boxes but this remained the only one. I held onto it in my own collection for all these years but am fine to part with it now. If you end up owning it, I'd suggest printing this ramble out to keep with it.

I've included a picture of the turquoise cover (the way it was meant to look)as a reminder/comparison...but don't confuse things, this auction is for this one white-covered 45 only.

...The record itself?...it was their truly awesome first (and only) 7" single...band was made up of ex-/later members of such punk/post-punk legends as the Bedhogs, the Swankers, the Undertakers, Soggy Porridge, the Relatives, Suicide Squad...(and then the Candy Harlots)...quite some pedigree.

Although they were embraced by the Sydney punx, and their previous bands had all been snottier Pistols/Clash types, the Kelpies had an edge...a moody sometimes sinister edge...yet ALWAYS utterly intense (their gigs were phenomenal events - they remain one of my fave live bands EVER)...and although the punk ethic pervaded everything they did, their sound embraced the likes of Theatre Of Hate, Gang Of Four (first EP era), and especially (pre-Joy Division) Warsaw. Live, the twin guitars of Brian Connolly and Mark Easton monstered you with equal parts menace, relentless pounding rhythm and melody (all these elements are evidenced on this single) and Jim Atkins commanded that stage in the same way the likes of Johnny Rotten and Stiv Bators and Henry Rollins have also done - in complete and utter control, with vein-bursting intensity and 100% commitment.

It's a great record...but...oh yeah...we were talking about the one-off cover...I got carried away.

CONDITION:

COVER/VINYL: ( EX- / EX )...record has merely a couple of very light marks (only)...I kept another normal-covered copy in my collection as well, but appear to have played this one too...it has a couple of spindle marks on each label...regardless, it plays beautifully...cover has a fingerprint stain at top centre (on the edge), and the top edge has some mild scuffing too, otherwise it's beautiful...in its aberrance!
