Opening with the sound of an approaching demonic cavalry, stampeding over an equally menacing guitar, so heralds the return of VV and Hotel of The Kills, with their second album 'No Wow', picking up from where we last heard them torturing instruments on their critically acclaimed blues/rock album 'Keep On Your Mean Side'. Still sounding like PJ Harvey in the midst of a teenage tantrum, VV coos and sighs on top of their unique blend of modern blues with a distinctive garage-rock drawl. However, the unconventional duo seem to have consciously decided to make their drum machine an honorary third member of the band, by allowing it to shine on this album with indie-disco beats permeating through their dark and murky riff-based deliberations.
This is heard to spectacular effect on 'Love Is A Deserter', where VV and Hotel take turns to venomously declare it's time to "get the guns out" before embarking on a painfully long two-second silence only to be further disrupted by a bothering guitar riff that personifies the perverse vocal humpings of its’ creators. On the single 'The Good Ones' The Kills once again prove they have an unmistakeable ear for a tune where a sleazy lounge-beat is a willing accompaniment to further guitar perturbing from the duo as they meander on and off the dance floor with a lusty swagger. A further album highlight is 'Murdermile', where a hiccupping guitar riff, recoiling bass and perfectly executed hand claps are laid down whilst a vicariously sexual VV waveringly delivers the vocal performance of a lifetime.
With all their instantly catchy trash-guitar hooks and clever beats, The Kills' truck-stop blend of rock ’n’ roll is so undeniably infectious that one can't help but find their eccentricity anything but endearing.
