This overlooked gem of a pop album was criminally ignored in England and never released in the States. The four Keys may wear their influences (mainly the Beatles and their producer, Joe Jackson) a bit too much on their sleeves but their knack for pretty melodies, close harmonies and intelligent lyrics make the overall sound original and fresh. And any band that can write such sparklers as “If It’s Not Too Much” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry” can be forgiven a few minor flaws.

This is a long lost gem that should belong in any power pop lover's record collection. When Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello emerged on the British scene in the late 1970's, they grabbed the attention due to the freshness and vitality of their music. Too bad this similar-sounding British band, produced by Joe Jackson himself, did not achieve the same degree of success and recognition. Melodies to die for ('I Don't Wanna Cry' is sublime pop) and lots of energy displayed on every single track on here with closing song 'World Ain't Turning' sounding like a great anthemic power pop tune.

As a conclusion, I think the best introduction to this album, short of listening to a few extracts, is the 'KEYS SLEEVE NOTE' found on the back cover of the vinyl LP, from which I quote extensively:

"The KEYS SOUND, many believe, is characterized firstly by KEYS HARMONY - an astonishing technique wherein three voices sing at once but - and here's the twist - sing DIFFERENT NOTES (...) Most important of all though, must be the quality, diversity and sheer class of KEYS SONGS - from the brash aggression of 'HELLO HELLO' to the pop perfection of 'I DON'T WANNA CRY'; from the epic drama of 'SATURDAY TO SUNDAY NIGHT' to their one heartbreaking ballad 'GREASY MONEY'; 'IF IT'S NOT TOO MUCH', where the 60's meet the 80's; 'BACK TO BLACK', where the 50's meet the 80's; or 'RUN, RUN, RUN', where Eddie Cochran meets the Beach Boys. Consider too, their never-ending search for perfection, their use, for instance, of several microphones on the drum kit, and their insistence that the whole recording be made on not one, but EIGHT whole tracks. It has been worth the wait"

Vinyl: NM. Looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. The finish is shiny, with no visible defects. Labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And no warps.
