... The Latinization of Bunky Green demonstrates the happy merger of two forms of musical expression (the Afro-Latin beat and jazz) which have been married before on many occasions before this recording, but hardly with the unity of style with which Bunky and his men join them. As Bunky, himself, explains it, ‘Prior to this album, it has been customary to play straight jazz against a Latin background. However what I'm doing here is playing Latin with the Latins. I'm playing the alto like a timbale player would play his solo, only with a melody.’
Though this album is the altoist's first recorded work in this genre, Bunky's attraction to the Latin Beat is no come-lately whim. For two years , the altoist played with Manny Garcia's fiery Latin aggregation. Subsequently, he joined forces with the men on this album, led by vocalist-percussionist Vitin Santiagio. Bunky has also jammed with with Latin percussionists Caco and Cortijo and the supreme timbale player of them all, Tito Puente, at one of Bunky's home bases, Chicago's 'Havana-Madrid'. From this broad exposure to the infectious rhythms of the tropics, Bunky has acquired a solid knowledge of of the Afro-Cuban percussive heritage.
Vinyl VG+ - 160gram vinyl, the sound is clean and detailed. There is little background noise and although there is a 'mark' right across side 2 it doesn't sound at all (and with three 'cooking' tracks, this is the side I have played most)
Cover VG - The ravage of age alone, not abuse, brings the grading of this cover down. A heavy card sleeve with the rear paper overlapped, it is not written on or stained or creased. However it has ringwear front and back, shelf wear and corner wear, the spine is still quite good. The un-coloured back paper is a bit grubby. The sleeve is punctured top right as a promotional copy would be.
