For sale is a four-episode block of original radio episode LPs for the series "The Lost Lennon Tapes."  I have owned these albums since I was a radio station manager in the late 1980s so they came to me unopened and I saw them played once on the air, then I personally put them back in their boxes and I can attest that they have not been played since.  They have been under my constant care and custody for over twenty years. 

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE THESE SETS BEEN PLAYED?  ONLY ONCE, IN 1990.  NO JOKE!

"The Lost Lennon Tapes" was an American music documentary series presented by Elliot Mintz, comprising a three-hour premiere episode and 218 one hour episodes, broadcast on Westwood One Radio Network between 24 January 1988 and 29 March 1992.  The premiere episode features an introduction from John Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono, explaining why she chose to give Westwood One Radio access to the tapes from which the shows content is based around. She described the selection of Elliot Mintz as the presenter not so much as a choice, but a "karmic destiny", as Mintz had been a close friend of the Lennons for some time.

Some of the recordings featured throughout the series also appear on the Beatles Anthology documentary series, which began three years after the final broadcast of this radio series.

Note the extremely rare episode of "The Break-Up of the Beatles."  Aside from the premiere episode, the "Break -Up of the Beatles" is one of the two most sought-after episodes of this series.  In their original mailers and with all of their paperwork these are INSTANT COLLECTIBLES!!

All of the four episodes included here are in their original individual shipping containers (see auction pictures) from Westwood One and have only been played once, and that is during the air date window in 1990.  They were then returned to their original mailer boxes and have not been played since.  As such, between original shipping boxes and the albums themselves being in near-pristine condition,  these items are extremely collectible (look at other ebay listings; NONE have original shipping boxes and paperwork, as I do).

Each episode contains two (2) two-sided LPs.  They have beautiful album sleeve art by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono (see pictures) and this really adds to the richness of the albums as a collectible.

SECRET HIDDEN MESSAGE:

Okay, now for all of you true collectors who want it, here’s the “back story” for you:

You are bidding on “does not exist” items. 

The normal sequence of events is that these arrive by second-day air to the radio station, well in advance of the scheduled airplay.  There is what is known as a “cue sheet” to show segment times and allow for the playing of local commercials and station IDs.  Then, at the conclusion of the broadcast, the radio station personnel sign the included “Certificate of Performance” to affirm that the albums(s) were played and the show was broadcast. 

Then, because sponsors sometimes embedded prepaid commercials into the program itself (that’s how they could afford to send out the albums every week), the albums the stations received were in fact fully owned by Westwood One Radio Networks, and the radio stations were only borrowing them long enough to use them and broadcast them one time during the stated broadcast window.  At that point, the radio stations were NOT allowed to keep them, and Westwood One did not want to pay to ship them back.  So guess what happened to them?

Under contract, the radio stations were ordered to DESTROY these albums.  Yep, every one, every time.

Obviously, that did NOT happen here!!  But it also means that these albums are an extreme rarity and each one is clearly a collectible.  So when considering the purchase of such an album from here (or anywhere else, if you can even find them!) look for the following items to be included:

Cue sheet: Yes (sometimes erroneously referred to as a “cut sheet”) that shows segments and their associated lengths, contents, commercials, outcues, and inserts for local breaks.  In short, it lists all of the elements contained in the album.

Certificate of Performance: Yes (these are excessively rare because, in theory, every album set should have been played and therefore every Certificate of Performance should have been mailed back to Westwood One).
