Up for bid is a new, unplayed copy of The Microphones - Jimi Sharp Man of Mystery tape. I bought it directly from Jimi Sharp at the 2007 What the Heck Festival in Anacortes, Washington. It comes with a magazine that has pictures of and stories about The Microphones frontman Phil Elverum. Here is the story of the cassette:
Once upon a time a tape of unreleased songs was given to Jimi Sharp, a friend of Phil Elverum. At What the Heck Fest 2007 Jimi Sharp himself dubbed copies of this unreleased music and sold them with his 'zine. These dubbed copies came with a photocopy of the painting and writing from Phil on the original tape. It is unknown how many copies sold, but last heard there were around 40 copies made. Here's Mr. Sharp's information on this incredible release:
"In July 1997 after moving away from Anacortes (out of state) for a year I asked Phil to send me a few particular songs I'd seen him sing live but were not available on any release. To my delight and tremendous surprise Phil sent me a gift in the form of a 90-minute cassette tape of un-released Microphones' songs and an 11" x 17" piece of paper folded in half (which made it appear to be an 8 & 1/2" x 11" piece of paper) painted in black ink on all sides. For the front cover Phil had painted a giant vortex. Above the vortex he painted the words, "the Microphones" and below the vortex he painted the words, "Jimi Sharp Man Of Mystery", which was very kind of him and completely caught me off guard. At first I thought he'd painted another front cover for The FIB until I opened it up and noticed he had painted the titles to a lot of his unreleased songs."
