Description
The classic Miles Davis Quintet on Prestige. When this LP was issued, in 1955, it was the "New" Miles Davis Quintet. Featuring tenor sax great John Coltrane in his first record date with Miles and at the beginning of an astounding surge of musical development for both Miles & 'Trane. The rhythm section is Red Garland, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; and "Philly" Joe Jones, drums. It doesn't get any better than that! Songs are: "Just Squeeze Me", "There Is No Greater Love", "How Am I to Know?", "S'posin", "The Theme" (Miles' first recording of this tune--his set sign-off), and "Stablemates" by Benny Golson.
The record is in VG+ condition. There are some visible scratches, but they don't impede the tracking--this is the heavy older vinyl and is more forgiving... There is tracking noise, some static pops. The smooth vinyl near the label on the A side has the letters "RVG" scratched on it and "A" stamped next to it , as well as "PRLP-7014-A-2)". Side B has "RVG B and "PRLP-7014-B".
The cover is the old-style cardboard with a paper overlay, with the slick front cover stock wrapped around the edges and the back page glued over the edges. It states it is "printed and packaged by G E M Albums, Inc., N. Y." Prestige Records' address, printed along the bottom of the back cover, is 447 West 50th Street, New York, 19, N.Y. The cellophane on the front is beginning to peel off near the open edge. There is a 1" edge split in the center of the top, a 1/2" edge split at the bottom near the open edge, some wear on the spine both at the top and bottom. The catalog number and title are readable on the spine, except the ink has rubbed of on the "LES" of Miles Davis. Still, not bad for a 54-year-old historically-important LP.
