The Oscar Peterson Trio’s We Get Requests is one of the great “put it on and everything feels better” jazz albums—elegant, swinging, and effortlessly welcoming, with the kind of relaxed virtuosity that never needs to show off because it’s always there. Recorded in 1964 for Verve, it captures Oscar Peterson in peak form alongside the beautifully complementary rhythm team of Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. The trio sound completely locked in: Peterson’s touch is bright and buoyant, his lines flowing with that signature mix of classical clarity and bluesy bite; Brown’s bass is warm, authoritative, and melodic enough to feel like a second lead voice; and Thigpen supplies a lighter-than-air pulse, brushing and tapping with just the right amount of sparkle. The result is a record that swings hard without ever feeling rushed, and feels sophisticated without ever being intimidating.
