Description
A 1st press of Beggars Banquet on the UK Decca label from 1968. Matrix 4A/2A. Stampers 1B/1U - placing it within the 1st 1,000 copies ever pressed. The heavy set vinyl comes housed in an original Decca Mono cover printed by Garrod & Lofthouse.
Vinyl (Vg/Vg-) In nice shape, but has clearly seen a considerable amount of use. There are several marks either side - so if you are someone who doesn't like a lot of marks you need to move along. Also please note on side 2 there is one mark which spans tracks 3-5 and it is feelable particularly across 'Stray Cat Blues'. This mark causes a bit of crackle in SCB, but there's no jumps or skips detected. Now, if that's the sort of thing that you can't handle you need to look for another copy. If, however, you're prepared to take it on the chin then this true mono 1st press still delivers some decent audio. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly VERYGOOD level of playback. And let's just qualify that - do expect a bit of crackle in many places - particularly where that mark resides. At no point does it really interfere with the audio to an extent that it overwhelms. I personally quite liked the rendition, but this copy is clearly not for a hifi purist as you would be disappointed. So, yet again do weigh this copy up in the round and bear in mind it has been priced super-low due to condition.
Cover (Vg) In great shape and that iconic white cover is still not fairing too badly at all. Ageing is usually the main problem with this title and here it really hasn't affected the cover too much at all. Please do expect a fair bit of wear around the edges and a small tear at one point on the spine. The interior is in very decent condition with no issues. Overall the cover still retains decent rigidity and is the genuine 1st mono issue.
