Description
Continuing my sale of original and early pressings I am now offering the iconic Rolling Stones first album from 1964. This is an extremely rare copy of the album. Although there is a 1A/2A matrix version with the 2:52 version of Tell Me it was soon replaced by the correct long version (4:06) with the lowest Matrix number 3A on side 2. The copy on offer is Cover A1, Label Z. This is the FIRST cover that can be identified as follows:
1) Mona is listed on the sleeve AND the label
2) You Can Make It You Try on sleeve (IF is missing)
3) Honest I Do credited to Hurran, Calvert instead of Reed
4) Now I Got A Witness credited to Like Uncle Gene and Uncle Phil instead of Like Uncle Phil and Uncle Gene
5) Bozier (not Dozier) on sleeve and label
The two Matrix numbers for the short (2:52) Tell Me A1/A2, as described above. Tell Me (4:06) with the lowest Matrix number XARL-6272-3A and the non-boxed DECCA logo on this copy. The first cover Mona is always on the Flip covers in production in 1964. The back cover Printed in England by MacNeill Press. The first release, estimated time of manufacturing is Spring 1964, Mona was the first manufactured. Made in England. The Decca Record Co. Ltd early 1964.

This was the very first label used for side 2 with the 4:06 correct long version of Tell Me. The second acetate was probably cut only a few weeks after the first one. The mistake on the demo version was discovered early on. The Matrix number was changed and the lowest matrix number with the long Tell Me is XARL-6272-3A.
The cover has a few very minor creases on the front and expected fading on the back for a sixty year old album but has been looked after by me in proper storage and being played with the best cartridges I could afford over the years. The spine is fully intact and the cover has been graded as at least VG+ as, with other albums I have recently sold, it has my name on the back cover that provides provenance as an impetuous teenager consumed by the Dymo label craze at the time. I have included the original inner sleeve which has been replaced by a modern, protective sleeve and I have graded the sleeve as VG+.
Having play graded the album my honest assessment is a grading of VG+ due to the expected surface noise from an original copy, particularly on a Mono recording. There are no scratches, pops or clicks that detract from the music. There is very little spindle wear and the vinyl has a few minor surface scuffs but no damage to the surface. Essentially, this is an opportunity to own a truly original copy of the Stones iconic first album.
